How I Built My Baby’s Brain While Living My Life
As a parent, I used to dread the “recommended” amount of tummy time. It felt like one more item on an endless checklist, and frankly, I often needed both of my hands free to actually get things done, whether it was folding laundry or answering a quick email.

I realized the secret wasn’t making my baby love tummy time; the secret was making it convenient for me! If it was easy to set up, I was more likely to do it often, and that consistency is what really builds those brilliant brains.
Here are the simple hacks I used to integrate tummy time into our actual life:
Set Up Safe Tummy Time “Zones”: I brainstormed the spots where I always needed two hands free—the kitchen while I prepped bottles, the office floor where I did my work, and the laundry room. I made sure to have soft, safe play mats (my favorite is linked below!) and a few engaging toys set up in those exact spots. This way, when I needed to do something, I automatically placed my baby on the floor instead of resorting to a bouncer or swing. Pro Tip: This reduces the reliance on “containers,” which can actually restrict the natural movements their brain needs.
Talk, Talk, Talk (Even If They’re Fussing): I used tummy time as an opportunity to build their language and auditory development. I’d talk to my baby about what I was doing (“Mama is folding this blue towel!” or “Listen to the water running!”). This not only strengthens our bond but keeps them engaged even when they feel frustrated, making those few minutes of tummy time feel more purposeful.
Stack Your Activities: This is my favorite trick! If I had a 10-minute task, my baby was on the mat. I was building their core strength and coordination while I achieved something for myself. Getting two things done at once feels amazing and gives your baby more of that precious brain-boosting practice.
Remember, every wiggle, roll, and attempt at lifting their head is a rep at the “brain gym.” You don’t need a perfectly silent, scheduled session. You need to build those brains while you live your life!
