A Parent’s Guide to Brain-Building
As a parent, I used to think of a baby’s development in simple terms: they’d learn to sit up, then crawl, then walk, and eventually, their brains would just get smarter. But I’ve learned a powerful secret that has changed my whole approach to play: the brain doesn’t just grow on its own. It’s built, layer by layer, from the bottom up.
This journey of discovery has been incredibly empowering because I now know I’m an active participant in my child’s neurological development. Here’s a simplified way to think about how this works:
- Layer 1: The Brainstem. This is the most basic layer, responsible for survival. Things like breathing, crying, and the grasp reflex are all controlled here. Early, simple movements like gentle tummy time help to build this crucial foundation.
- Layer 2: The Midbrain & Cerebellum. This is where the magic of movement happens. As my baby starts to roll, crawl, rock on all fours, and eventually climb, they’re developing this layer. This is the brain’s “control center” for balance, coordination, and posture. The stronger this layer is, the more stable their foundation for future learning.
- Layer 3: The Cortex. This is the top layer, responsible for all the higher-level skills we think of as intelligence—like language, problem-solving, and emotional regulation. But here’s the key: this layer can only function at its best when the two layers beneath it are well-developed.
Knowing this has made every playtime more meaningful. I’ve realized that every bit of floor time, every climbing session on a play couch, and every opportunity for my child to spin or hang is like a dose of fertilizer for their growing brain. I’m not just a spectator; I’m helping to lay the neural wiring for their future school success, social skills, and overall confidence.
If you want an easy way to help build your baby’s brain, I’ve put together a list of my favorite toys and tools that support this kind of purposeful play. You can find them on my Amazon storefront: https://www.amazon.com/shop/buildingbrilliantbrains.
