Why Hanging is a Powerful Tool for Your Baby’s Brain

As a parent, I’ve learned that some of the most powerful activities for my baby’s brain are things I never would have guessed. For a long time, I thought “hanging” was just for big kids on the playground. But it turns out, it’s one of the most powerful brain-building exercises you can start from babyhood. It’s a key principle in neurodevelopment that I now incorporate into our daily routine.

I’ve learned that when my baby hangs—and I make sure they are actively engaged, not just passively held—it’s doing so much more than just building strength. It’s a full-body workout for their developing nervous system. Here’s what’s happening in those few short seconds:

  • Primitive Reflex Activation: Hanging activates key primitive reflexes that are crucial for a baby’s development. These reflexes lay the foundation for future coordination, balance, and good posture.
  • Grip Strength: It builds grip strength, which is a surprisingly strong predictor of future athletic ability, handwriting skills, and even cognitive health later in life. A strong grip is a sign of a strong brain-body connection.
  • Shoulder Girdle Strength: Hanging strengthens the shoulder girdle—the muscles and bones that connect the arm to the trunk. This is vital for supporting crawling, climbing, and the fine motor control needed for tasks like writing and using tools.
  • Vestibular Stimulation: It stimulates the vestibular system, the part of the inner ear responsible for balance and spatial awareness. This system is the cornerstone of all learning and sensory processing.
  • Encouraging Brachiation: By hanging and moving, even in a small way, babies are practicing brachiation—the act of swinging from their arms. This activity is shown to boost lung capacity, improve cross-pattern movement, and support whole-brain integration.

How to Start at Home

The best part is, you don’t need a playground to start this. I use my thumbs, a rattle, or even a small dowel rod to let my baby hang for a few seconds. It’s a simple, short, and playful activity that I try to do every day, and I can literally see my baby’s brain and body getting stronger together.

I’ve found some great products that help with this kind of purposeful play on my Amazon storefront. You can check them out here: https://www.amazon.com/shop/buildingbrilliantbrains.

If you want to know more about the science behind these movements, I’m happy to share more! This kind of intentional play is all about giving our children the best possible foundation for a lifetime of learning and health.
