Why I’m Teaching My Child to Climb, Jump, and Explore with Purpose

As a mom, I’m no stranger to that heart-stopping moment when my child scales the couch or stands precariously on a chair. I’ll be honest, it’s not great for my gray hairs! But I’m here to tell you that these moments are not just a test of a parent’s sanity—they’re actually incredible for a child’s brain. I’ve learned to reframe these situations with a new mantra: let them do dangerous things carefully.

Children are wired to move, explore, and learn through their senses. Their brains crave the kind of input they get from pushing their physical limits. Climbing isn’t just a way to burn off energy; it’s a full-body workout for their developing minds. They learn to plan their next move, practice stability, and understand concepts like height and depth perception. It’s a powerful form of problem-solving that they can’t get from a screen or a book. As nutritional movement expert Katy Bowman says, “Children are built to move, explore, and learn through their senses. Their brains thrive when they engage with the world.”

By encouraging our kids to take calculated risks and test their limits, we’re teaching them invaluable life skills. They learn how to make decisions, build resilience, and trust their own bodies. It’s not about eliminating risk, which is impossible anyway, but about teaching them how to manage it wisely. When I see my child climbing, I don’t just say “Be careful!” Instead, I’ll ask them things like, “Where’s your focus?” or “What’s your next move?” This empowers them to think through the process and take ownership of their actions.

I’ve learned to take a deep breath and let my little adventurer try. The right environment can make all the difference. For us, that means having a dedicated space with soft surfaces and toys that encourage this kind of movement and exploration. I’ve found some amazing tools for this on my Amazon storefront, which you can check out here: https://www.amazon.com/shop/buildingbrilliantbrains.

Let’s empower our kids to blow our minds. They are so much more capable than we often give them credit for, and watching them learn to navigate the world with confidence is one of the greatest joys of being a parent.
