Why the Vestibular System is the Foundation for Your Baby’s Development
As a mom, I’ve heard a lot about tummy time and how important it is. But recently, I learned something that changed the way I approach it: the vestibular system is the foundation for every single milestone. It’s the brain’s center for balance and coordination, and by giving it the right kind of input, we can supercharge our baby’s development.

I was amazed to find out how simple it is to incorporate this into our daily routine. I’ve started doing these three supervised tummy-time movements, and I’ve seen a noticeable difference:
- Side to Side 🌊: I gently rock my baby from side to side. This teaches them balance and weight shifting, which are the building blocks for rolling and eventually crawling. It’s so gentle, you can even start from the newborn stage.
- Forward + Back ↔️: While they are on their belly, I gently tilt them forward and back. This movement strengthens their core and integrates reflexes that prepare their body for more complex skills like sitting up and standing.
- Spin 🎡: My baby’s favorite! I slowly and gently turn them in a circle while they’re on their tummy. This boosts their spatial awareness and helps the left and right sides of their brain communicate. This is absolutely crucial for coordination, focus, and even reading readiness later in life.
Every gentle rock, tilt, and spin I do tells my baby’s brain exactly where their body is in space. It’s laying down the neural pathways they’ll use for everything that comes next—rolling, crawling, walking, and beyond.
To make these movements even easier and more fun, I found a specially designed pillow with a dip in the middle. It keeps my baby secure without sliding off, and it’s become my go-to tool for vestibular play at home. It’s a game-changer! You can find this and other amazing developmental toys on my Amazon storefront: https://www.amazon.com/shop/buildingbrilliantbrains.
Remember, vestibular input equals milestone mastery, and that leads to incredible brain development. I’m so glad I learned this, and I hope it inspires you to make tummy time a little more intentional!
