Why Rolling and Flipping Are the Magic Moves Every Parent Needs to Know
As a parent, I’m always looking for ways to make playtime both fun and impactful. I recently discovered that two simple moves—rolling and flipping—are not just for giggles. They’re actually a secret weapon for brain development. I’m here to tell you, parents, don’t miss the magic!
We all know these movements help with balance and coordination, but did you know they can even help with reading readiness later on? I was amazed to learn that. So I’ve been making it a point to safely introduce them into our daily play.
Here’s how we do it, and how you can too:
The Log Roll (Side to Side) This one is so simple and fun! We start with my little one lying on a soft mat on the floor. I gently guide their legs across their body to help them roll from their back to their tummy and vice versa. To make it even more exciting, we’ll sometimes roll down a soft wedge or even roll across a big blanket together. It’s all about making it feel like a game!
The Forward Roll (Head Over Heels) This one feels a little more advanced, so we always do it on a padded mat or a soft play couch. I help my child crouch down, tuck their chin, and then I support their head and hips to guide them through the roll. We start slow and steady because the goal isn’t speed, it’s about helping them become aware of their body and how it moves in space.
Flips & Assisted Tumbling This is where the laughter really comes in! I hold my little one securely at their hips or waist and gently flip them forward or backward over my arms. We’ll flip into a pile of pillows, which they absolutely love! I use songs or countdowns to add to the fun and build anticipation. It’s a great way to build rhythm and body control.
My Pro Tips for Playtime
- Safety First: I always stay close to spot my child and make sure we’re on a soft, padded surface.
- Barefoot is Best: We do all our rolling and flipping barefoot. The traction and sensory feedback from the floor are so important for their developing brain.
- Make it Playful: Giggling is a sign of a great brain-building workout! Laughter releases dopamine, which helps cement learning in the brain.
I’ve learned that these aren’t just “baby tricks.” These are crucial exercises that strengthen their vestibular system, which is the part of the brain that controls balance. It’s laying the groundwork for more complex skills like cartwheels and handstands, and even academic skills like reading and focus. It’s incredible to think that we can build these foundations just by playing together.
