Why I’m Guiding My Mobile Baby Off the Couch, Not Chasing Them
As a mom, I’ve had my share of heart-stopping moments. One minute, my little one is safely playing on the rug, and the next, they’ve managed to climb onto the couch and are looking at me with a mischievous grin, ready to take a headfirst dive onto the floor. It’s a moment that every parent of a newly mobile baby knows well! I used to just rush over and catch them, but I’ve since learned a powerful secret from a pediatric chiropractor: we can actually teach our babies how to get down safely.

It seems so simple, but it’s a skill that isn’t instinctive for them. Their brain is wired to move forward and up, but not necessarily to descend safely. That’s where we come in! As soon as your baby is mobile and climbing, you can turn a potentially dangerous habit into a brain-building opportunity.

Here’s the game plan I’ve been using to teach my little adventurer to get down safely, and it’s been a game-changer:
- Feet First: The next time your baby is on a couch or bed, get down on the floor in front of them. Instead of letting them dive forward, gently guide them to turn their body around so their feet are closest to the edge. I say, “Belly down, feet first!”
- Practice on the Tummy: Guide their body so they’re on their belly, ready to slide down. This position helps them use their core and limbs to control their descent.
- Verbal Cues: Say the same phrase over and over! Repetition is key to learning. I constantly say, “Belly down, feet first,” every time we practice. Over time, they start to associate the words with the movement.
- Repeat, Repeat, Repeat: The first few times, you’ll be doing most of the work, but gradually, you can give them less support until they can do it on their own. It’s amazing how fast they catch on once they have the right guidance.
This isn’t just about safety, it’s about building their motor planning, spatial awareness, and confidence. You’re not only protecting them from a fall but also teaching them to problem-solve and trust their body.

To make this a fun and safe process, I’ve found that having the right tools can help. I’ve curated a list of my favorite play mats and other developmental toys that encourage safe climbing and exploration on my Amazon storefront.
